An optical module 12 has an optical source 40, such as a light-emitting diode or a surface-emitting laser, on a carrier 16 with a first alignment means 50 and an optical ferrule 14 with a complementary second alignment means 28 supporting an optical fibre 30, such that, when the two alignment means are aligned, the optical source and the optical fibre are aligned. Power is supplied to the optical source 40 by electrically conducting pads 44,46. The carrier 16 may be a metal lead frame 42 and the alignment means may be a pair of holes and a pair of pins, or two pairs of holes 32,50 connected by a pair of pins 34. More than one optical source may be included on the carrier. The optical source 40 may be attached to the lead frame 42 by flip-chip bonding. |
