PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as an important precursor for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds, perfumes and dyes from a vinyl, alkynyl, aryl or heteroaryl methanol by using a specific mediator and an oxidizing agent. SOLUTION: This method for producing a vinyl, alkynyl, aryl or heteroaryl aldehyde or ketone comprises reacting a vinyl, alkynyl, aryl or heteroaryl methanol of formula I (Y<1> , Y<2> are each vinyl, an alkynyl, an aryl, a heteroaryl) with 0.1-0.5 equivalent of a mediator selected from the group consisting of aliphatic, alicyclic, heterocyclic or aromatic compounds each containing a NO group, a NOH group or a group of formula II (e.g. N-hydroxyphthalimide, 3-amino-N- hydroxyphthalimide) and an oxidizing agent (e.g. air, oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, an organic peroxide, a peracid, a perborate, a persulfate) in water and, if necessary, 5-30 wt.% of a water-miscible organic solvent (e.g. ethanol) at a temperature of 35-50 deg.C for 5-50 hr. |
