PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain the subject compound (S,S-EDDS) and e.g. a sodium salt thereof by charging a substrate for the reaction system in high concentrations and optimizing various conditions to dramatically improve the enzymatic reaction yield in the production of the S,S-EDDS from fumaric acid and ethylenediamine. SOLUTION: This compound, S,S-EDDS (S,S-ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid), is obtained by enzymatic reaction of a mixture composed of fumaric acid and ethylenediamine in the presence of microorganisms (a treated product thereof) having lyase activity; wherein, the total charge concentrations of the fumaric acid and ethylenediamine are 500-2,500 mM and 250-1,250 mM, respectively, the reaction liquor is adjusted to pH 7.5-9.5 using an alkali hydroxide or ammonia, and the reaction temperature is set at 0-45 deg.C. |
