PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition useful as a cosmetic, medicine, etc., for enhancing water content-retaining ability of stratum corneum and improving roughened skin by including specific 2-aceto-aminoalkanediols, specific 2-acylaminoalkane-1,3-diols and sterole at a ratio having liquid crystal structure. SOLUTION: This composition is obtained by including one component selected from (A) a 2-aceto-aminoalkane-1,3-diol represented by formula I (R1 is a 9-17C alkyl) and its optically active compound, (B) an 2-acylaminoalkane-1,3- diol represented by formula II (R2 is a 14-24C acyl) or its derivative and (C) a sterol group (especially cholesterol) and as necessary, (D) a compound selected from a cholesterol derivative, a fatty acid, etc., so that the the weight ratio of A:B is (1:1) to (1:8).
