PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject novel compound that is suitable for a liquid crystal component, particularly in TFT and STN display. SOLUTION: This novel compound is represented by formula I (Y is an alkyl, an alkoxy, an alkenyl, -CN, -F; X<1> , X<2> and X<3> are each H, F, Cl, CN; R<1> is H, an alkyl; A<1> and A<2> are each trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene; Z<1> , Z<2> and Z<3> are each -CO-O-, -CH2 -, -CH2 CH2 -, -C=C-; n, m, p are each 0-3 where m+n+p=1-4), typically 4'-penyl-4-propylbicyclohexyl-4-ol. The compound of formula I is prepared by starting with a compound of formula II to react with reagents of the formulas: R<1> MgBr, DAST and other compounds through 3-step operations. The compound of formula I is suitable as a liquid crystal medium component for a display, particularly based on the twisted cell law, the guset-host effect, the deformation effect of well ordered phase, electrically controlled birefringence and dynamic scattering effect. |
