PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject high-purity compound in a high yield, by oxidizing a specific triphenylmethane compound with an oxidizing agent in the presence of a monovalent copper compound in an aqueous solvent to rapidly advance the reaction. SOLUTION: (A) A triphenylmethane compound of formula I (R<1> to R<6> are each an alkyl or R<1> and R<2> , R<3> and R<4> and R<5> and R<6> are mutually bonded, respectively to form heterocyclic rings with N) is reacted with ((E) an oxidizing agent of 1-1.2 times as much as the component A in the presence of (B) a monovalent copper compound in the molar ratio to the component A of 0.0001-0.50 and (C) optionally an alkali hydroxide and/or an organic base, acid or urea in (D) an aqueous medium of 2-20 times as much as the component A at a temperature of 40-120 deg.C for 3-40 hours to give a phthalide compound of formula II. Preferably cuprous oxide, cuprous iodide or cuprous chloride is used as the component B and air, oxygen (a mixture of oxygen and an inert gas) or hydrogen peroxide as the component E. |
