PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material for perfumes, medicines, agricultural chemicals, etc. by heating a dimethacrylacetal compound in the presence of at least a compound selected from the group consisting of specific hydrogen sulfate salts and ammonium salts as a catalyst. SOLUTION: This method for producing an unsaturated aldehyde comprises heating a dimethacrylacetal of the formula (R<1> , R<2> are each H, a 1-10C aliphatic hydrocarbon, a 1-10C aromatic hydrocarbon) (e.g. acetoxyaldehyde dimetharylacetal) in the presence of at least one kind of compound selected from the group consisting of alkali metal hydrogen sulfates (e.g. potassium hydrogen sulfate) and organic sulfonic acid ammonium salts (e.g. ammonium pyridinium methane sulfonate) as a catalyst in an inactive gas atmosphere. The alkali metal hydrogen sulfate and the organic sulfonic acid ammonium salt are used in an amount of 10 ppm to 1 wt.% and in an amount of 50 ppm to 1 wt.%, respectively, on the basis of the compound of the formula. |
