PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a solid activated carbon which shows a large capacitance ratio during discharging with a small current to discharging with a large current and which has practical capacitance and large mechanical strength by controlling the pores in such a manner that the pore diameter of the max. differential pore volume in the pore size distribution obtd. from the Argon adsorption isothermal curve is equal to or larger than the max. ion diameter of the electrolyte liquid present between polarizing electrodes and is smaller than specified times of the max. diameter. SOLUTION: The pore diameter is controlled to be equal to or larger than the max. ion diameter of an electrolyte liquid and smaller than <=5.0 times of the max. ion diameter, and especially preferably 1.5 to 3.0 times. Moreover, when the capacitance of the activated carbon is measured by a static current discharging method with a large current of 300 mA/cm<2> and a small current of 30 mA/cm<2> , the capacitance ratio during discharging with the small current to discharging with the large current is most preferably >=40.0%. The solid activated carbon is obtd. by mixing 20 to 200 pts.wt. of a carbonizing resin to 100 pts.wt. of an activated carbon powder and/or activated carbon fiber, molding the mixture and carbonizing by heating, and calcining to obtain one body. The obtd. activated carbon is especially suitable for electrodes of an electric two-layer capacitor and an auxiliary power supply cell. |
