PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for firing a β-alumina pipe, designed to improve the durability of repeated use of a vessel covering a β-alumina molded from in its firing. SOLUTION: This method, which is intended to obtain a sintered compact of a sodium ion-conductive β-alumina by firing a β-alumina pipe molded form, comprises as follows: the β-alumina pipe molded form is fired by covering it with a vessel consisting of MgO crystal >=20 μm in average grain size; as a result of this grain size, the thermal conductivity of the vessel increases, reducing the temperature difference inside the vessel during temperature rise; accordingly, vessel strain due to the temperature difference is reduced, resulting in markedly improving the durability of repeated use of the vessel; it is preferable that the vessel consists of MgO of >=99% purity and its thermal conductivity >=0.1 cal/cm.sec. deg.C. |
