PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject industrially important compound used as a resin raw material, an antifreezing liquid, etc. in high selectivity over a long period by reacting an alkylene oxide with water in the presence of a specific anion exchange resin as a catalyst. SOLUTION: This method for producing an alkylene glycol comprises reacting an alkylene oxide (preferably ethylene oxide, propylene oxide) with water in the presence of an anion exchange resin having a structure where quaternary ammonium groups are bound to the aromatic groups of a vinyl aromatic compound polymer through connection groups each having a three or more atom chain length, preferably an anion exchange resin having structural units of formula I (R is a 3-6C alkylene; R<1> -R<3> are each a 1-4C alkyl, a 1-4C alkanol; X<-> is an anion) or formula II (A is a 1-4C alkylene; B is a 4-8C alkylene) in the coexistence of carbon dioxide or an inactive gas at a pressure of 0.2-2 MPa at a temperature of 60-160 deg.C. The alkylene oxide and the water are used in a molar ratio of 1.1/1 to 6/1. |
