The bimetallic element (2) consists of two or more fingers (21 - 25) which are connected electrically and have their lower ends held rigidly in a support (3) made from two semi-cylindrical aluminium or stainless steel bars (30, 31) with facing flat surfaces (300, 310) and are joined by mechanical fixing (4) such as a stainless steel rivet. The fingers can be made in the form of a series of U-shaped elements joined by their lower ends, which are held in the support, and designed for increased electrical resistance and for enhanced heating and increased flexion force. The flat surfaces of the semi-cylindrical bars have a coating of an insulating material 20-150 mu m thick - which is tetrafluoroethylene when the bars are of stainless steel or a hard sulphide anodisation when the bars are of aluminium.
