The invention concerns a hydrotreating catalyst obtained by the formation of Chevrel phases consisting of molybdenum sulphides and small metal cations selected among the group consisting of nickel and cobalt on the granular support made of refractory metal oxides characterised in that 90 % of a Chevrel phase crystallites present have a diameter less than 10 nanometers and are dispersed on a granular support with surface specific area greater than 100 m<2>/g.
