According to the invention a transmitter element (2) can be moved past an induction sensor (1) and a digital output signal (Vout) can be generated by means of an electronic evaluation circuit (3). Between the connecting lines (10, 11) of said induction sensor a symmetrical voltage divider (R2, R3) is positioned, the tapping point (8) of which is connected to a reference voltage source (Vref) via a resistor (R1). The diagnostic voltage (Vdiag) which can be tapped at the level of the tapping point (8) is evaluated in a discrimination unit (D) positioned downstream so as to detect characteristic errors.
