Animal feedstuffs and concentrates for addition thereto useful in the treatment and prevention of histomoniasis comprise as active ingredient a compound of general formula <FORM:0888675/VI/1> and non-toxic acid addition salts thereof with organic and inorganic acids wherein one of X and Y is a nitro group and the other is a hydrogen atom and R1 and R2 which may be the same or different represent hydrogen atoms or lower alkyl groups such that the sum of the carbon atoms in R1 and R2 does not exceed 4. Specified compounds are 1 : 2-dimethyl-5-nitroimidazole and 4 (or 5)-nitroimidazole. Feedstuffs may contain from 0.001 to 0.1% by weight of the active compound. Concentrates may comprise the active compound and a surface-active wetting or dispersing agent (e.g. for addition to drinking water) or may additionally comprise a physiologically innocuous carrier. Other active materials may be present for example, vitamins, other histomonacides, e.g. furazolidone, antibiotics, e.g. penicillins and their salts and tetracyclines and mineral supplements, e.g. manganese. |
