A filter element constructed from a blank consisting of a strip of paper or the like, which is pleated by reverse-folding it transversely and formed into an annulus with the pleats extending radially and axially, has ribs or corrugations or the like so formed (e.g. oblique to the edges of the original strip) that the ribs or corrugations on opposite faces of adjacent pleats cross one another at an angle.
