A PHARMACEUTICAL FORMULATION OF URIDINE TRIPHOSPHATE SUITABLE FOR ADMINISTRATION IN A SMALL VOLUME

A novel formulation of uridine 5'-triphosphate (UTP) for use in promoting increased mucociliary clearance of retained mucous secretions of the human airways, middle/inner ears, or sinuses is disclosed. The composition comprises UTP in an aqueous solution of suspension having a therapeutic concentration approaching the limit of UTP's solubility at ambient temperature. This high concentration allows for delivery of a therapeutic amount of UTP in a very small volume -- 50 to 100 microliters. This small volume formulation is suitable for administration via portable hand-held devices such as metered-dose inhalers. The highly concentrated formulation permits a high pH solution in the range of 8 to 10, and obviates the need for inclusion of a preservative. An additional advantage of the present formulation is extended shelf life without the need for refrigeration once dispensed to the patient.
