System (22) for synthesising textured images which comprises a texture analyser (24) and a texture synthesiser (28). The texture analyser (24) comprises a neural network for analysis (30) which learns to characterise a texture by calculating the synaptic coefficients (Cab) by employing at least one neighbourhood function characterising a neighbourhood around the pixels of the said texture. The texture synthesiser (28) comprises a neural network for synthesis (40) which receives the synaptic coefficients (Cab) thus calculated and which, through a relaxation mechanism, synthesises a replica of the learnt texture. The neural networks (30) (40) can have a tree-like structure. Applications: to a television, to a videophone, to a video compact disc. <IMAGE>
