A dye-donor element for thermal dye transfer has a support carrying (i) a dye layer area contg. an image dye in a binder, and (ii) a transferable protection layer area. The protection layer is approx. the same size as the dye layer and is less than 1 mu m thick, up to 75% of the protection layer is formed by particles. Also claimed is (A) a thermal dye transfer assembly which contains the above dye-donor element superposed on a dye receiving element, and (B) a method of forming a protection layer on a dye image involving (a) heating the above dye donor element imagewise to transfer a dye image to a receiving element and (b) thermally transferring the protection layer from the donor element on top of the dye image.
