The detector has a scintillation fibre (1,2) and an optical sensor (3) arranged at an interface end of the scintillation fibre. The optical sensor detects photons converted by the scintillation fibre. Preferably, the scintillation fibre may be wound into a sheet-like form or may be wrapped into a spiral. The scintillation fibre may be wound on a three-dimensional core. the optical sensor may be a photoresistor, a photodiode or a phototransistor and may be connected through an amplifier (4) to an analogue or digital evaluation circuit (6).
