The tool has a rotary spindle protruding from a housing transferring rotation from a drive motor to a tool bit. The safety device is activated by a tool jam detector to prevent deflection of the housing about the spindle axis if the tool suddenly jams. The safety device (11) is mounted in the housing (2) next to the spindle (6) and has at least two components (62,114) which interact by friction when activated. At least one part is attached to the housing and one other to the spindle, so that housing and spindle are frictionally coupled in the event of a jam. The drive train contains an overload clutch in series with the safety device.
