PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a use method of a catalyst for a boiling bed, in hydrogenation of a hydrocarbon charge stock that permits an extrudate of a catalyst to provide a stable material, can provide a conversion of 550 deg.C<+> fraction of a large amt. of a petroleum residue, permits the catalyst to surely hydrodesulfurize and hydrodemetallize the residue, can prepare light fractions meeting the specifications in refiners, and can alter several petroleum qualities, for example, the stability of 350 deg.C<+> residue fractions. SOLUTION: The catalyst comprises an extruded carrier comprising alumina- based juxtaposed agglomerates and a group VIB catalyst metal/catalyst metal compd. and/or a group VIII catalyst metal/catalyst metal compd. In the catalyst, the total S of the group VIB and VIII metals in terms of oxide is 0 to 50 wt.%. A part of each of the agglomerates is in a flaky stacked form with another part being in an acicular form. The acicular portion is homogeneously dispersed simultaneously on the periphery of the flaky stacked portion and between the flakes. |
