PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reflection type liquid crystal display device hardly causing the deterioration of liquid crystal due to light, having high display characteristics capable of being used for long time and capable of obtaining a sufficient contrast ratio and to provide a liquid crystal projector device having high reliability and superior display characteristics. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer is formed of liquid crystal with negative dielectric constant anisotropy, and on the opposite surfaces of two transparent substrates 1 and 13, orientated films which orient liquid crystal molecules perpendicularly to the substrate surfaces when applied with no voltage and also twist and orient the liquid crystal layer when applied with a voltage are provided. On the light incidence side, a polarizing element 3 which has its incident light polarization direction 23 and projection light detection direction 24 at right angles is so arranged that the bisector L of the angle between orientation directions 25 and 26 wherein the liquid crystal molecules of both the orientation layers are twisted and oriented and the incident light polarization direction of the polarizing element 30 is 40 to 50 deg.. |
