PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a good bookshelf structure together with bistability and to improve contrast by forming the one extreme surface of an orientated film exhibiting plural optically stable states of a Langmuir-Blodgett film and holding a liquid crystal compsn. having the surface energy lower than the surface energy of the other oriented film between substrates. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer (liquid crystal compsn.) 10 is held via a spacer 16 between a pair of the substrates 11a, 11b having electrodes 12a, 12b formed of thin films of In2 O3 , etc., and the oriented films 14a, 14b respectively thereon. The liquid crystal compsn. 10 exhibits at least the two optically stable states and the one extreme surface of the oriented films 14a, 14b is formed of the Langmuir-Blodgett film and the surface energy thereof is made lower than the surface energy of the other oriented film. The liquid crystal compsn. to be used preferably contains a fluorine-contg. liquid crystal compd. which has a fluorocarbon terminal part and hydrocarbon terminal part, is bonded at both terminal parts by a central nucleus and has a smectic intermediate phase or latent smectic intermediate phase. |
