PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high brightness and a high resolution at the same time by optimally setting up the thickness of a shadow mask and the horizontal pitch of a stripe. SOLUTION: An electron beam emitted from an electron gun installed at the neck of a valve whose neck and panel are connected is hit against a phosphor layer inside the panel through a beam passing hole 22 of a shadow mask 10 installed along the panel, to thereby display a picture on the panel. The beam passing hole 22 is formed in a stripe shape, and a pitch P of a width direction of the beam passing hole 22 in the center of the shadow mask 10 is adjusted in the range of 8.81×10<-4> -1.23×10<-3> against the length of a width direction of an effective image plane of the panel. Also, the beam passing hole 22 is formed in a stripe shape, and a thickness of the shadow mask 10 is adjusted in the range of 0.25-0.56 against the pitch P of a width direction of the panel of the beam passing hole 22 in the center of the shadow mask 10.
