There are disclosed N-5-protected 2,5-diamino-4,6- -dichloropyrimidines of the general formula (I), wherein R is an alkoxygroup or trifluoromethylgroup, which are useful intermediates for the preparation of pharmaceuticals having antiviral properties. Said compounds are prepared by cyclisation of an N-protected aminomalonic ester with guanidine, in the presence of an alkali metal alcoholate, and subsequent chlorination of the resultant N-5-protected 4,6-dihydroxy-2,5- -diaminopyrimidine.
