The method of detection and determination of characteristics of a multidimensional image, associated with salient points in the image, consists of evaluating the variability of a local weighting of a first point in the image relative to at least one other point situated in the neighbourhood of this first point, and calculating the local anisotropy on the field of gradients at the point. The anisotropy is dependent on terms linked to a dispersion of gradient vectors. These terms are weighted by raising at least one the terms to a power. If each of the terms are raised to a power the index is different for each term.
