The reactive force generators are attached to the vehicle and activated on demand or in an emergency to produce a force acting in the opposite sense to the direction of travel of the vehicle. They might provide some or all of the force needed to slow or to stop the vehicle. The reactive force is generated by creation of a jet effect, using compressed gas or liquid, or created by combustion or explosion. Preferably the jet force is controllable. To avoid risk of explosion, the generators are attached to the body with mountings that release once a certain temperature is exceeded, and springs propel the generators clear of the vehicle.
