A rotary head apparatus for use in recording and/or reproducing digital signals on and/or from a magnetic tape is provided. The rotary head apparatus includes a stationary drum (11) having formed therein a lead (11b) which achieves a helical wrap of the magnetic tape traveling at an SP (Standard Play) mode speed and an LP (Long Play) mode speed. The lead has a lead angle (&thetas;) which is set to a middle value between a first ( alpha ) and a second lead angle ( beta ). The first lead angle allows a first slant track (TP1) to be recorded on the magnetic tape at a first standardized track angle during traveling of the magnetic tape (T) at the SP mode speed, the second lead angle allows a second slant track (TP2) to be recorded on the magnetic tape at a second standardized track angle during traveling of the magnetic tape at the LP mode speed. <IMAGE> <IMAGE> <IMAGE>
