When preheating and/or drying a glass furnace charge, the flue gas is used as heating gas. The charge is heated in a processing chamber (11) with an outer layer (13), transported by a vibratory motion around a concentric shaft (5) on at least one transport path (6), heated directly from above by the flue gas and indirectly from beneath by the heat from the transport path (6) which is at a temperature of 200 DEG C to a level just under the temperature threshold at which the charge starts to agglutinate. In order to solve that problem, a non homogeneous charge characterized by a wide particle-size range is preheated in a homogeneous manner at a temperature up to 500 DEG C in such a way that as little dust as possible is produced and desagregation is avoided due to large gas amounts; the flue gas is distributed through at least one transport path into a number of radial streams and inserted through openings (8) into said concentric shaft (5). The radial streams join again into one flow, their vertical components being turned in the same direction.
