<p>A secondary ignition coil (5) is connected at each end to the sparking plug (6,7) in one of a designated pair of cylinders (1,4), one being in compression, while the other (4) is exhausting. The parameter relied on is the arithmetic mean of the output voltages. As these are opposed, this value takes the sign of the greater. Remaining near zero as both voltages increase, with opposite polarity, it assumes a level near that of the plug under compression when the other becomes conducting. This step-change, processed (8) to produce a binary signal representing + or -, is used to distinguish between the paired cylinders and to control (Vc) the switching of the primary coil (2) through e.g. a power transistor (3).</p> |
