The control unit has a processing unit (26) to receive operating state signals e.g. engine crank angle signal, gas pedal activation signal. It calculates control values for a task on the basis of a specific signal, or on the basis of a signal received in a preset time, according to a preset program, in a time period between the signals. An appts (402,403) limits or counts the number of executions of an interrupt triggered by the task activation signal. The processing unit determines the duration of a fuel injection on the basis of an engine crank angle signal, in the time period between crank angle signals. In the case of a poor mixture combustion, the number of interrupts is limited or counted so that at least one fuel injection occurs in the tie between the crank angle signals.
