The invention relates to an internal combustion engine, specially for a motor vehicle. Said engine is fitted with an injection valve and directly injects fuel to a combustion chamber during a compression stage in a first operating mode or during an induction stage in a second operating mode. The internal combustion engine is also fitted with means for recirculating the exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber and with a control device to control and/or regulate the amount of recirculated exhaust gas. According to the invention, the amount of exhaust gas recirculated back to the combustion chamber in both operating modes can be controlled and/or regulated differently.
