Sun roof for motor vehicle

The sun roof has rigid roof panels (14-16) which can be moved in the direction of travel to at least partially open an opening (12) in the roof. The panels move in guides (18) attached to the vehicle. By a normal movement of the panels between open and closed positions the panel retainers are inoperative, and only in the event of a crash, a brake assembly (28,34), slows the movement of the panels due to a decelerative force. The brake assembly can have a roof mounted fixed stop and an opposing crash-operated support (22) for closure movement of the panel.
