PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel cord having remarkably improved impregnability of a rubber material, exhibiting small extension under a low load, free from displacement between the core and the sheath and producible at a low cost. SOLUTION: This cord is produced by collecting a pair of element wires delivered from a delivery reel, introducing into a reforming means to form a spiral element wire group having spiral form, placing 5 element wires around the wire group and collectively twisting the wires. It has a 1×n structure formed by twisting 7 element wires having the same diameter in the same direction at the same pitch. In this case, either one of the element wires 3a, 3b constituting the spiral wire group is positioned nearly at the center of the cord and alternately exchanged with the other wire nearly at definite intervals in the longitudinal direction of the cord.
