PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a petroleum-based carbon excellent in electric properties by collecting aπelectron-containing carbon having extremely excellent electric properties and baking the carbon under pressure with removing carbon having inferior electric properties as much as possible. SOLUTION: A H component to be extracted from a petroleum with n-heptane is produced, firstly the alkyl group of the H component is pretreated and heat-treated under pressure of a decomposition product gas or an inert gas under 20 kg/cm<2> to 50 kg/cm<2> at 500 deg.C to 1,000 deg.C for 2 to 8 hours to remove the alkyl group component of the H component containing one benzene nucleus and one naphthalene nucleus as much as possible. The carbon component of an aromatic compound in a ratio containing a small amount of alkyl group, one benzene nucleus and one naphthalene group obtained by the pretreatment is heat-treated under pressure of 40 kg/cm<2> to 100 kg/cm<2> in a decomposition product gas or an inert gas at 2,200 deg.C to 3,000 deg.C for 2-8 hours and a residual alkyl group carbon is removed as much as possible to give the objectiveπelectron-containing carbon having extremely excellent electric properties of aromatic compounds of benzene and naphthalene in the petroleum pitch is heated and baked.
