PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering system for a vehicle that can swiftly switch to manual steering. SOLUTION: A variable gear ratio unit 14 varies along with a transmission ratio by a motor is interposed at an intermediate part of a steering transmission system connecting a steering wheel 10 and dirigible car wheels 24, and a control means 30 is provided to control the transmission ratio according to the state of a vehicle. A steering system 2 of such constitution is provided with a direct- coupling means for limiting the operation of the variable gear ratio unit 14 and putting the steering wheel 10 and the dirigible car wheels 24 in the direct- coupled state, and an operation control means for controlling the operation of the direct-coupling means by a control signal to the motor of the variable gear ratio unit 14.
