PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high tenacity aluminum oxide sintered material useful as a structural material and a base plate material required to have a high mechanical strength and a high reliability and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: This high tenacity aluminum oxide sintered material having >=300 MPa bending strength measured by a three point bending method as set by JIS-R1601 and >=5 MPa.m<1/2> breaking tenacity set by JIS-R1607, is produced by using aluminum hydroxide produced by the Bayer method as a raw material, calcining a mixture thereof obtained by adding 0.01-20 mass % abraded powder, etc., of a ball mill for crushing aluminum oxide as a seed crystal of α-aluminum oxide at 900-1,200 deg.C, and sintering the obtained α-aluminum oxide powder. |
