An interior monitoring system for a motor vehicle includes pattern recognition means to identify an occupant or content of the vehicle, means to determine the location of said object or occupant and output means to control another system of the vehicle in response to the location of said object or occupant. The pattern recognition means can be a passive or active infra red, radar, laser or ultrasonic system. The function controlled can be the airbag system, seat belt height, windscreen transmissivity, rearview mirror reflectance, opening of the electric windows, the air conditioning system, the hi-fi system, a driver attentiveness alarm system, a security system or carphone microphone direction control system. |
