PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical module which can couple light from a semiconductor light emitting element with an optical fiber with high coupling efficiency. SOLUTION: This optical module is provided with a semiconductor light emitting element LD with a laterally long near-field pattern and an optical fiber FB having a light incidence end surface which converges a longitudinal light intensity distribution larger than a light intensity distribution along the above-mentioned lateral direction. The semiconductor light emitting element is preferably a semiconductor laser. The projection light is laterally long with the near-field pattern and longitudinally long with a far-field pattern. The optical fiber, therefore, converges the longitudinal light intensity distribution larger than the lateral light intensity distribution, so the light incident on the optical fiber can be converged in its core with high coupling efficiency. |
