An automatic teller machine (ATM) has a data entry device (12) ofthe type that requires the hand of a customer entering data, such as the customer's personal identification number (PIN code), via the device to move to various positions according to the data characters (16). To make it difficult, if not impossible, for another person to determine the customer's PIN code simply by observing the customer's hand movements, the positions required for entry of the data characters are changed in a random or quasi-random manner after each entry of a PIN code. The ATM further comprises first sensing means (20) for detecting if a first condition, being the presence of a first person in a normal ATM user's position, is met, second sensing means (22) for detecting if a second condition, being the presence in, or entry into, a predetermined safety zone (24) around the normal ATM user's position, of a second person, is met, and security means (34) which is operative in response to the first sensing means detecting that the first condition is met, and the second sensing means detecting that the second condition is met, to trigger a security procedure.
