The seat has a locking device (11) close to the top of the forward tilting back (6) of the rear seat. The locking device has a bolt (12) slid out of its withdrawn position to project into an adjacent component by an actuator controlled by a deceleration sensor detecting severe deceleration of the vehicle. The adjacent seat back (7) may have a keeper (13) to house the projected bolt. The bolt may be held in place against a compressed spring by a locking mechanism in the actuator until required to be released e.g. in a frontal collision.
