The Specification describes dyes having the general formula <FORM:0964060/C4-C5/1> wherein R1 is a phenyl or naphthyl group containing at least two sulphonic acid groups but no other substituents other than a methyl group, R2 is a benzene residue bound to the -N=N- and -NH- groups in para-position, R3 is a benzene residue bound to the -CO- and -NH- groups in meta- or para-position, and X is the residue of a dibasic acid. They are prepared by diazotizing an amine of the formula R1-NH2 and coupling it with an aminobenzene H-R2-NH2, wherein the benzene ring may also contain methyl, ethyl, methoxy or b -hydroxyethoxy substituents. The azo dye produced is reacted with a m- or p-nitrobenzoyl chloride (which may be further substituted with a methyl group) to give a compound R1-N=N-R2-NH-CO-R3-NO2. The nitro group is then reduced to the amine and the product reacted with the dihalide of a basic acid. Dibasic acids specified (of which X represents the residue) are carbonic, fumaric, isophthalic, terephthalic, butadiene-1 : 4 - dicarboxylic, pyridine - dicarboxylic, pyrrol-2 ; 5-dicarboxylic, furan - 2 ; 5-dicarboxylic or thiophene-2 ; 5-dicarboxylic acids. |
