The novel feature in an expandable, halogen-free, flame-retardant coating composition containing an epoxy resin, polyphosphoric acid ester (I) and a hardener is that it comprises 75-95 parts wt. epoxy resin and 5-25 parts wt. (I), with the wt. ratio (resin + (I)) : hardener being 1.1-10 : 1. Claimed production is by first reacting the resin with (I) and then treating the reaction product in a second step with the hardener.
