METHOD FOR SOURCE TRANSFER IN A WIRELESS TELECOMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM

In a wireless telecommunications system comprising a mobile switching center and at least two base stations, control of a selection/distribution unit (SDU) i s passed from a source base station to a target base station during source transfers. Mor e particularly, the target base station establishes a packet-based connection with the SDU so that control information relating to an active mobile call may be transfe rred from the source base station to the target base station via the SDU with the tar get base station then taking the role of the source base station in the call. Upon comple tion of the source transfer, the source base station disconnects the link based on the s econd interconnection protocol from the SDU.
