In the production of fatty acid esters (I) with reduced heavy metal content by esterification of fatty acids with alcohol or ester exchange of methyl ester or triglyceride with alcohols in the presence of tin(IV) catalysts, the tin(IV) compounds are converted to tin(II) compounds, which are precipitated as hardly soluble salts, using a combined reducing agent and precipitant.
