Restraint system for occupants of a motor vehicle includes a gas generator with a housing comprising a cup-shaped filter tube (3) to which a combustion chamber tube (8) ia attached, containing a solid propellant (7) for generation of hot gas. The filter tube has a larger diameter than the combustion chamber tube, which is longer than the former tube. Apertures (2) are positioned around the circumference of the filter tube for outflow of gas. The filter tube has a cover (1) containing an ignition unit and the part of the combustion chamber tube inserted in the filter tube is coaxial with the ignition unit. The combustion chamber tube is preferably closed at the end remote from the filter tube by an end cap (9).
