The system for detecting gas leakage from a gas cylinder and valve includes a mobile cover which is intended to encase the valve assembly. An infrared sensor is provided which is sensitive to the presence of the gas contained within the cylinder. This is connected to a pipe which leads from the cover which surrounds the valve assembly, enabling the gas within the cover to be sampled. Beyond the infrared detector there is a device to force gas through the pipe, from the mobile cover, past the infrared sensor and out into the atmosphere. The diameter of at least part of the transfer pipe is reduced in order to ensure a speed of gas flow in excess of 10 metres per second. A pipe diameter of 5mm or less may be chosen to achieve a gas flow speed of 20 to 70 metres per second.
