Signal generator for call arriving to network call responder

The signal generator (10) is coupled to a subscriber terminal (25) and comprises a first detector and evaluator (44) for a signal from the exchange, or an answering machine, indicating arrival of a new message for the subscriber terminal. A first memory (50), coupled to the first detector and evaluator, stores the number of newly arrived messages for the subscriber terminal at the network answering machine. An output (110) provides an optical and acoustic presentation of the content of the first memory. Preferably, a second detector and evaluator (42) recognise a signal from the exchange, activating the reception state of the signal generator.
