The wood burning fireplace combines two combustion modes. The first is an open fire in which the fire is open to the ambient air and is overhung by an hood connecting to a first smoke exhaust conduit equipped with a movable valve. The second is a closed fire in which the fire is confined inside an enclosure equipped with an air inlet and a second exhaust conduit. It is formed by a single fireplace equipped with confining caisson, enabling the arrangement of only an open or only a closed fireplace. The pivoting walls (10,12,14) of this opening caisson are separable. One wall (16) is retractable inside a base (18) of the fireplace.
