In an image plate based on a neutron-sensitive storage phosphor for detecting neutron radiation, the phosphor itself absorbs neutrons to emit secondary radiation for creating, within the phosphor, photo-stimulable storage centres which emit light on optical excitation. Preferred phosphors include compounds of formula (a) AxN1-xH:yD, where A = one or more of Na, K, Rb and Cs, N = one or more monovalent strongly neutron absorbent elements such as Li, H = one or more of F, Cl, Br and I, D = one or more dopants selected from Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Tl, In, Pb, Ga and Sn and x and y are natural numbers in the ranges 0.01-0.08 and 0-0.2; (b) ExN'0.5(1-x)N'"0.5(1-x)F1-xH1+y:zD, where E = one or more of Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Na, K, Rb and Cs, N' = one or more of Li, Na, K, Rb and Cs, N'" = one or more of Gd, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu, H = one or more of Cl, Br and I, D = one or more dopants selected from Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Tl, In, Pb, Ga and Sn and x, y and z are natural numbers in the ranges 0.01-0.99, 0-0.15 and 0-0.2; and (c) LnxN1-xOH:yD, where Ln = one or more of La, Y and Lu ions, N = Gd, H = one or more of Cl, Br and I, D = one or more dopants selected from Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Tl, In, Pb, Ga and Sn and x and y are natural numbers in the ranges 0.01-0.99 and 0-0.2.
